Well. I'm not really helping. More... consoling, really. In a more tasteful, freshly baked kind of way. Instead of the hugging sort of way. Which I'm assuming you've already had.

Hey, it's a type of help. And I really needed it.

Well, good. So you're feeling like yourself? No strange new powers? An unusual desire to be positive? Because you seem a little too positive. That happened to me once.

No, Spirits! I'm fine! Don't do that, you almost sound like Tenzin.

Hey, if anything, Tenzin sounds like me. Besides, I'm just making sure. The Malnosso do some weird things and they aren't always obvious. You may think you're fine now, but tomorrow you might start breaking into people's homes to sleep in their beds.

...Has that happened to you?

No, that example I made up. The being positive one? That one actually happened. Another time I was turned into a kid. But only in body, not in mind. Both were sufficiently embarrassing.

Man they've got some weird ideas.

You have no idea, Korra. Did anyone tell you about the experiment we just had? Because that was among the weirdest. Because picture this. You go through a door and suddenly you're the size of an ant. And you're fighting giant spiders to survive. And here's a hint: that actually happened. More times than I like to remember.

You mean... spider-rat, right?

[Oh, she's seen the weird non-hybrid animals in Luceti. She's just choosing to ignore them.]

[Aha. It's been so long since those days that going back and forth between his own animals and the ones here didn't even get a second thought.]

Nope. No spider-rats. I'm not sure if that would be worse or not. Toph and I saw a spider nearly as big as Appa, though. It was really hairy too.

Sounds nasty. Did you kill it?

We got away from that one. But I killed my fair share of other spiders. Even more when I was back to my normal size.

[He has no mercy on them now.]

Yeah, that'll show 'em.

It is merely one of many things I will add to my list of heroic exploits. [He leans back into the couch. Making himself comfortable.] Anyway, the whole thing was pretty crazy. It was definitely annoying, but it didn't get into my head. As experiments go, I would give it a six.

Is one or ten the worst?

Ten being a 'not so bad'. So one would be worst.

So what kind of experiments rank a one?

The worst ones are where they mess with your mind. Every February, they make you fall in love with someone. It doesn't matter who. The first time was bad, though. It was a friend of mine that liked me already. So when it turned out it wasn't real, it was... rough. Really bad. The next year was just as bad, because I convinced myself it wasn't real. So I spent a week being in love with a girl, but not letting myself be with her.

And then there's October. They try to freak us out at the end of the month. One time it was just making us... see and hear things. Creepy things. The stuff that would make you freak out. Stuff you didn't want to remember. Last year, we thought we would all die. The Moon looked like it was going to crash into us. We just had to sit there and wait silently for it to finally land and crush us all. It didn't, in the end. But it looked like it would.

But maybe the worst is when they show us what we could be, if things were different. It doesn't hurt and it isn't scary. But that sticks with you and doesn't go away.

Oh, that...

That's terrible, I'm sorry. [And it's all really, really scary.]

It's the things you learn to live with, being here.

[There's a moment as he finds himself staring at the ground, before he blinks back to reality.]
